The long days of the crepe myrtle,
Luscious as sweet corn,
Welcome as ripe tomatoes in the hand,
Feed us on peach dreams.
The dawns indulge us in lemon-light;
Through lazy naps under robin trees,
We bathe in twilight jasmine,
And the nights are full of eggplant mystery.
Our Lord sets a table before us
And urges us to eat.
Our cups overflow and we smile at the sky.
Then He puts His warm arm around us.
“Peace be with you,” He says to us.
“May I walk with you in the warm vineyard?
The grapes tonight glisten like jewels.”
Will we treasure these moments as summer’s moon wanes?
